Natural Honey and Wound Healing

June 17, 2009

Honey is used for many things other than eating.  It has been used for thousands of years for wound treatment.  The slow release of hydrogen peroxide in honey makes it very effective as an anti-bacterial agent.  By being release slowly hydrogen peroxide is able to destoy bacteria without harming live tissue.

The enzyme in honey that produces hydrogen peroxide is called glucose oxidase.   Too mach heat and light can reduce the activity of glucose oxidase.  Tolerance to heat varies to some degree between different types of honey.

It is always best, when possible, to get unpasturized honey as it will retain its enzyme activity.  (Pasturization is essentially purifying through heat.)  Unpaturized honey or natural honey (raw honey) will retain its enzyme activity and be more effective at helping to heal wounds.

When storing honey at home, keep in a cool dark place.

Generally believe to be the result of a weakened immune system, excema can cause the skin to become extremely itchy.  Relieving the itchiness is often the most foremost issue with most people having this skin problem.  With young children and infants it is vital as they often have less self control when it comes to ‘not scratching’.

Seeing a doctor or naturopath to check for allergies and chemical reaction in the environment can go a long way to solving the cause of the eczema. (more…)

Treatment for Sore Cracked Dog Paws

June 1, 2009

It can be difficult to put creams or lotions on swollen or cracked paws that they are not going to try and lick off.  Dog paws can take a beating and when they get cracked or swollen the reasons and cures can be similar to those that a two legged person may use.  Thentix, with honey, calendula and royal jelly, has been used for years to help with dry cracked heels for people.  These ingredients absorb and retain moisture which help the skin heal more quickly.  I found recently that many are using it for their dogs.
