Should You Wear Sunscreen?

For years I could not make sense out of the skin cancer scare. What didn’t make sense to me was that most of the human race spent the majority of the time out in the sun over the last 10,000 years or so. Do the research and you will find that the companies that manufacture sunscreen and sun block would have us believe that we should be using these products 24/7 – that we can even get sunburn, thus cancer through our office window. It seems to be one of those things that “everybody knows” - One of those pieces of unevaluated data. If I follow that logic, then I figure that the human race would probably have died out by now – years ago – from all that exposure to the sun. It’s only in the last, what, 30 years, since sun block and sunscreen have been used, that this problem has been on the rise.
The real cause of the increase in skin cancer could very well be the lack of adequate sunlight exposure to the skin! After all, this is where we get our vitamin D – that’s how the body manufactures Vitamin D – exposure to the sun, which in turn allows calcium to be absorbed properly into the body’s cells. This proper absorption is crucial in bone development and also apparently in the prevention of some cancers. Apparently different body types (skin color has a lot to do with it) need different amounts of sunlight.
Here is a site that goes into all this in more detail with a number of other referenced sites: http://www.middlepath.com.au/qol/sunlight.php
So, get some sunlight a much as you can or need. You do want to take care of the skin though. Don’t let it get too dried out. In reality, what you loose when your skin dries out is water, more than oil. So, you want to put something on your skin that will help your skin retain the moisture – ideally, something you can put on before you go out in the sun and during that won’t actually block the sun that you need. Honey will do this. I don’t advise putting honey on your skin but it acts in such a way as to make the skin absorb and retain moisture. So, find some skin conditioner or cream that has honey as a prime ingredient and use that. Also, don’t over do your time in the sun – you can always put a shirt on once you’ve had enough.
